ASHES ROSES AND LACE 1981

Elliott has often described his modus operandi as “Like a somnambulist in a casino who constantly keeps hitting the jackpot”. ‘Ashes, Roses and Lace’, is undoubtedly a highly charged picture and with an elusive meaning. As the artist states, “Much of my work is a form of beautiful visual poetry and I am not about to turn it into prose in the process of explaining it. That would destroy it.” The image has a dark sense of beauty and displays brilliant use of lighting and colour. The rose petal idea, highly original at the time, has been much immitated in popular culture.
